Southern Mens League, Eltham - July 31st, 2010
On Saturday, the senior male side of Bracknell AC travelled to Sutcliffe Park in Eltham, for their final match in Division Three South, of the Mens Southern League. Winning nineteen of the Thirty Six events, including three double victories, where they took both.
“A“ and “B“ string honours and with a further eleven second places, Bracknell were convincing winners. With a fifteen point margin of victory Bracknell scored 111, Horsham came second with 96 points and London AC were third with 83 points. Kingston Poly failed to show.
With four wins from the five matches, guaranteeing at least third place in the League, it is galling to think that Bracknell are entrenched in Division Three for another year. But barring a miracle from the results of the yet unknown matches, this would appear to be the case. For with only the top two teams being promoted, Bracknell seemed doomed to be the runners up.
The Throws team were superb on Saturday dropping only two points in their four events. Robert Mungham and Team Captain Jan Drzewiecki got the match off to a great start, by winning both strings of the Shot. Robert established his first win at the event this season and the team gained their first double victory, since the final match of last year. The pairing’s success was continued in the Hammer, Robert beating his nearest rival, by over 24 metres and Jan winning the “B” string contest, with a nine metre plus margin of victory. This partnership continued in the last event of the day, the Discus. Though Robert won the “B” string, Jan sadly had to settle for second place, beaten by a mere four centimetres. In the Javelin Matthew Why, was another that had to be content with the runners up position. The winner throwing over four metres further than Matthew’s personal best. As consolation, Matthew’s younger team mate Elliott Heighes, with a fourteen metre margin of victory, impressively won the “B” string contest.
In the Triple Jump, Gary Newson recovering from an expensive knee operation, took second “A” string place, with a leap that broke the Bracknell Club record, for his age group, . His “B” string partner Chris Larsen with an effort just short of his personal best, gained his first win at the event and Bracknell‘s first win in the junior Triple since July 2008.. Earlier with partner Sean Kennedy, Gary had won the junior High Jump. Sean on leave from the Army and making his seasons debut, took second place in the “A” string. Not having competed for over two years, Sean cleared the High Jump bar with some aplomb, having earlier taken second place in the Pole Vault.
The team were magnificent on the track, winning nine of the events, plus both relays. Stuart Phillips and Fraser Duncan shared the winners rostrum in the 100m, having both won their respective strings. Then in the 200m, Stuart equalled his seasons best time, to take a close second place. Partner Alex Carr in the junior half lap sprint, lowered his seasons best time, to finish over half a second in front, of his nearest rival.
Mitchell White in the 400m beat off a spirited challenge to win the race, by a spilt second. In so doing he dipped under the 50 second barrier, becoming the first Bracknell athlete to do so since before 2003. Partner Doug Gray took second place in the one lap sprint, in a new personal best time.
With no partners to share the load, Alex Mouradian recorded a fine win in the 5000m. Whereas Lyle Duncan was over three seconds faster than the next man home in the 400m Hurdles.
Richard Larsen ran a seasons best time and with over four seconds to spare, convincingly won the 800m. Whilst younger brother Chris, took second place in the junior two laps. Henry Mitchell in a time just outside his recently set PB, took second place in the 1500m. Partner Jake Hughes making his seasons debut, having completed his University studies, won the “B” string metric mile.
In the last individual race of the day, the 3K Steeple Chase, Jake taking second place, recorded Bracknell’s best time at the event since July 2006. In the “B” string, squaddie Sean, became Bracknell’s first junior Chase winner, since July 2005.
Straddled either side of the Steeple Chase, is the Relays. In the 4 x 100m relay, the quartet of Phillips, Gray and the two Duncan brothers, were over a second faster than the second team home. Equalling their seasons best time, set at the previous match, this in turn equalled their fastest time since July 2005.
Then in the closing track event of the day, the 4 x 400m relay, the squad of Lyle Duncan, Chris Larsen, Doug Gray and Mitchell White were easy winners. Mitchell running the glory leg, brought the baton home, six seconds, nearly forty metres clear of the second team finishing.
Young Athletes League, Boys - July 18th, 2010
On Sunday, the Bracknell combined boys and girls team, travelled to Ealing, for their fourth and final match of the season in the Young Athletes League. Competing in the Southern One North West Division, with three wins under their belt, Bracknell before the fixture, were top of the League
Wycombe Phoneix, also competing at Ealing in another match, lying second in the League, were realistically the only team with any chance of catching Bracknell. But even they, had to make up a 180 point deficit. On paper to end as Champions, Bracknell did not need to win, only to score a maximum of 420 points.
However, such is the spirit in the Bracknell team, that despite their numbers being depleted (mainly due to Schools trips), only winning this final match would do. Daubing themselves with face paint, in the Bracknell colours of Blue and Gold, thus brandishing their tribal markings, the team went to battle. In the end, it turned out to be just a mere skirmish. For scoring 589 points, Bracknell easily won both the match and the Title and promotion to the Premiership next season. Woking came second with 412 points and St Marys were third with 406. Wycombe in the other fixture, won with a score of 523 points.
Of the teams overall tally on Sunday, the Boys contributed 297 points.
in the Under 13 side, Tom Lewis received Bracknell’s Man of the Match award, for his Grade One wins in the Long Jump and 200m. A mere 2cm short of Grade One, Tom with a personal best clearance, also won the High Jump. Anders Vansgaard, Tom’s partner in the Long Jump, ensured maximum points for Bracknell, by taking second place. Anders,s Grade One distance, exactly equalling his winning leap, in the recent Berkshire U13 Schools Championships.
Dean Hull, Berkshire AA Under 13 Champion, won the Shot by over two metres, with a personal best Grade One putt. His nearest rival was team mate James Coster, who taking second place with a new Grade Four effort, gained maximum points for the Club. Will Cooper and Matt Litchfield-Williams making his team debut, were one point shy of the maximum, taking respectively second and third places in the 1500m. Both lads achieving new personal best Grade Four times.
Berkshire AA Under 13, 600m Champion, Steve Seddon was favourite to win the 800m on Sunday. Sadly in the 75m Hurdles, an event in which he is also currently Berkshire Champion, he aggravated a leg injury and although bravely finishing, had to withdraw from the two lap race. In both Hurdles and 800m, Steve was paired with Matt Harris, who gained valuable points for the Club, with two personal best clockings. Indeed his time in the Hurdles was a mere two split seconds away from a Grade.
The last event for the Under 13 Boys, is the 4 x 100m relay. The quartet of Robbie Wilde, Tom Lewis, Rob Gray and Jack Hellewell, ran Bracknell’s fastest time this season, but had to settle for second place, beaten by a split second.
in the Under 15 side, three English Schools medallists were competing. ESAA 1500 Champion Matt Seddon, cruised around his gold medal event, to finish in a comfortable Grade One time, over 30 seconds ahead of the next man home. His partner Steve Payne took third place in the metric mile, in a time just outside his own personal best.
ESAA 80m Hurdles Silver medallist, Alex Walker, beat off a spirited challenge, to win in a Grade One time. Partner Callum Wesley, another making a team debut, took third place in a Grade Three personal best time.
ESAA Triple Jump Silver medallist, Aaron Scardifield, won the Long Jump, with a personal best Grade One leap. Alex Walker took third place with a Grade Three distance.
Charles Grint ran Grade Three times, with a second and a third place, in the 100m and 200m races. Scott Halstead won both the 400m and 800m, in respective Grade Two and Grade Three times. Jamie Keen yet another making his team debut, took fourth place in the 400m, as did Dan Riddington in the 800m. Dan’s time being just outside his personal best.
George Summersgill and Ben Russell, took maximum points in the Hammer, as did Lawrence Grazier and George in the Shot. Both lads achieving new personal best putts.
At the same time as competing in the Hammer, Ben Russell was also taking part in the High Jump. An event he won with a Grade Two clearance.
The U17 side, was most affected by the School Trips, the side consisting of only eight brave souls. Depleted in numbers maybe, but not in talent, for they won eight of the eighteen events.
Shaun Wyllie entered in three individual events, won all three. The 400m, the 400m Hurdles, in which he ran a Grade Four time and the 1500m, in which he ran another Grade Four. Jordan Bateman ensured maximum points in the 400m, with a fine second place. In the 1500m, Luke Bartholomew took third place, completing a middle distance double, having earlier taken fourth place in the 800m.
Luke’s partner in the two laps, was Adam Wimbledon. Winning the 800m by over 2.5 seconds, Adam was to later win the 3000m in a Grade Four time. In the short sprints, Jake Pope took third place in the 100m and Ross Millar with a new PB took second place in the 200m.
On the Field, Jake took second place in the Long Jump, as did Scott Hill in the High Jump. Matthew House and Scott took maximum points in the Javelin and Matthew partnered this time by Jordan Bateman achieved the maximum in the Shot Putt. Both of Matthew’s winning throws being Grade Fours.
The last events on the day are the 4 x 400m relays. The quartet of Keen, Riddington, Seddon and Halstead, ran Bracknell’s fastest time this season, in the Under 15 relay, winning by over eighteen seconds. Then in the Under 17, 4 x 400m, Millar, Bateman, Bartholomew and Wyllie, had only the clock to beat, as they ran unchallenged.
Missing from the action on Sunday was English Schools winner, Zak Seddon. Taking the Gold Medal in the 1500m Steeple Chase and in the process breaking the Championship record, which had stood for 21 years, Zak was selected to represent England in the Aviva Schools International in Glasgow. On Sunday, he was returning from Scotland, having won the Steeple Chase for England on the Saturday. Well Done Zak.

Young Athletes League, Boys - June 20th, 2010
Kingston was the venue on Sunday, for the third fixture this season, in the Young Athletes League. Before the match, with two wins under their belt, Bracknell’s combined boys and girls team, were in first place, in the Southern One West Division. A mere ten points ahead of Wycombe Phoneix, who they were due to meet at Kingston.
The League has been completely restructured this season, with only three teams now attending a match, instead of four. The “A” and “B” string system has been dropped and now six athletes, two per club, contest each event, on a first past the post policy. The scoring based on six points for the overall win, five points for second place, down to one point for the runner up. The other big change this year, is the dropping of League points (three for winning, two for second place etc) in favour of accumulative match points. The highest total of match points scored over the season to decide the League winners.
With only ten points therefore, separating the two teams, the contest at Kingston, had the makings of a crunch match, the victor being likely to win the League. As it turned out, a strong Bracknell team dominated from the offset, finishing over one hundred and fifty points ahead of Home team Kingston, who pushed Wycombe into third place.
Bracknell’s score was 612.5 points, (their highest match tally this season), Kingston scored 456 points and Wycombe 441.5 points. With one match left to play, and a buffer of over 180 points, Bracknell are now favourites to win the League and gain promotion to the Premiership next season. Of the teams overall tally on Sunday, the Boys contributed 333 points.
in the Under 13 side, Luke Harris, ran a Grade Three personal best time to win the 1500, a success he shared with team mate Steve Seddon, who taking second place in the race, also set a new Grade Three PB. The duo becoming one of six, who were to score maximum points for the team.
Tom Lewis won the Long Jump, with a Grade Three distance, out jumping not just the Division One contestants, but also the athletes from the Premiership match, which was running concurrently. Although Dean Hull putt the Shot to a new Grade One distance, he had to settle for second place behind a strong Wycombe athlete. Team Mate James Coster set a new Grade Four PB, taking third place in the Shot.
Second and Third places were also the finishing positions for Adam Robinson and Will Cooper in the 800m. Both lads running Grade Four times. Matt Harris making his debut for the side, jumped well to take third place in the High Jump.
Three South of England Champions and Six Berkshire Schools Champions, competed in the under Fifteen side. Southern and Berkshire 1500m Champion Matt Seddon, currently the second fastest at the event in the country, ran the two lap race on Sunday. Winning the 800m in a Grade One time, Matt finished 17 seconds clear of the second man home. Scott Halstead Berkshire 800m Champion, won the 1500m in a Grade Three time. These two later gained maximum points, with Grade Two times, in the 400m. Matt winning the race in a new personal best time.
Alex Walker received Bracknell’s Man of the Match award, for his Grade One win in the 80m Hurdles. Alex currently the fastest in the country at the event, as well as being Southern and Berkshire Champion, shared his success with team mate Ben Russell, who ran a new Grade Three time to secure maximum points for Bracknell. Berkshire Schools Champion Charles Grint, ran a Grade Four time to take second place in the 100m.
On the field, Berkshire High Jump Champion, Ben Russell made a grade Three clearance to win the event. Saxon Coop who took third place in the High Jump, went on to win the Pole Vault. Aaron Scardifield, currently the best U15 Triple Jumper in the country, as well as being Southern and Berkshire Champion, gained maximum points with Alex Walker in the Long Jump. Both lads jumping new Grade Two distances. Lawrence Grazier, with a new personal best Putt, in partnership with George Summersgill, gained maximum points in the Shot. A double last achieved back in July 2008.
Berkshire 800m Champion Shaun Wyllie, made his debut for the U17 side, running the 3000m, which he won in a Grade Four time. Zak Seddon the fastest 1500m Steeple Chaser in the Country and current Berkshire Schools Champion, won the event in a National Standard time and in the process beat all the Premiership athletes, as well as lapping two Kingston rivals. Zak also won the 800m in a Grade Three time and the 400m Hurdles with a Grade Four clocking. Zak’s partner in the 800m, Luke Bartholomew, took fourth place in the time, just outside his PB.
Adam Wimbledon and Seb Bowerman, took maximum points in the 1500m. Adam setting a new Grade Four time. Berkshire 400m Champion Josh Speed, with team mate Jordan Bateman, grabbed maximum points in the one lap dash. Josh having earlier won the 200m in a Grade Four time. Adam Thomas the current Berkshire Schools 100m Champion, won the one gasp dash on Sunday, being the first Bracknell U17 to do so, since July 2008.
On the field, Scott Hill won the High Jump and gained a new personal best distance in the Triple Jump. Matthew House put nearly fifty centimetres on his best Putt to win the Shot and shared his success with James Parker, who taking second place, not only gained maximum points for Bracknell, but pulled off a double last achived in June 2008. James had earlier taken second place in the Hammer, allowing Kieren Webber to grab third, with a new personal best throw.
The last events on the day are the relays. The quartet of Hull, Robinson, Rob Gray and Jack Hellewell ran Bracknell’s second fastest time this season, but had to settle for second place, in the Under 13, 4 x 100m. Halstead, Walker, Grint and Scardifield, won the Under 15, 4 x 100m relay and for the third time this year bettered the old club record, which had stood since 1975. In the Under 17, 4 x 100m, Pope, Speed, Webber and Thomas, winning time was a split second slower than at the previous match. Which in turn had been the fastest time since before 1994.
Bracknell won both of the 4 x 400m relays. The U15 quartet of Riddington, Seddon, Payne and Halstead were eleven seconds faster than the second team home. Then in the last relay of the day, the Under 17, 4 x 400m, Speed, Wyllie, Seddon and Bateman, ran Bracknell’s fastest time this year, bringing the baton home over a minute quicker than their rivals.
Southern Mens League - June 5th, 2010
Last Saturday, Bracknell AC Mens’ Southern League teams, were combined Hosts at the John Nike Stadium, for their third round matches. The "A" side competing in Division Three South and the “B” side in Division Four West.
In beautiful sunshine, the senior side won nineteen of the Thirty Six events, including seven double victories, where they took both “A“ and “B“ string honours. Winning the match by twelve points Bracknell scored 117, Dartford (current league leaders) came second scoring 105 points, Crawley were third with 81 points and Swale came fourth with 43 points.
In the short sprints, Bracknell were majestic, winning all four races. Stuart Phillips recovery from injury, showed the way home in both the 100m and 200m senior races. Fraser Duncan in a new personal best time won the junior 100m and younger brother Lyle, also in a new personal best time, was over a second faster than his nearest rival, in the “B” string 200m. In the one lap dash, Richard Larsen making his season’s debut, was nearly half a second faster than the second man home. In the junior 400m, Doug Gray took second place, in a new best time.
Mitchell White suffered a rare defeat, In the 800m. In a hard fought race, Mitch running a time just outside his own personal best, had to settle for second place to a Dartford athlete, whose finishing time was two tenths of a second faster than Mitch‘s PB. Team mate Shaun McLauglan knocking an impressive five seconds from his previous best time, won the “B” string two laps, taking third place behind Mitchell. In the 1500m, Henry Mitchell making his season‘s debut following injury, took third place in the senior race, allowing team mate Sam London to win the junior metric mile.
Alex Mouradian reduced his previous fastest time by nearly twenty one seconds, to comfortably win the 5000m. The second man home, was club mate Jamie Ashton, who running a season’s best time, finished seventeen seconds ahead of their closest rival.
Bracknell dominated the two hurdle events, winning both string of the 110m and 400m races. Bruce Fletcher not having competed for two years due to University studies, showed all the ability of old, to finish a second and a half ahead at the end of the 110m Hurdles. His team mate Richard Stock, another making a season’s debut, won the junior race, with a two second margin of victory. Richard had earlier won the “B” string 400m Hurdles, two and a half seconds faster than his nearest rival. No doubt he was inspired by his senior partner, Lyle Duncan, who won the “A” string race, with a five seconds margin of victory.
The last wins for Bracknell on the track, came in the two relay races. In the 4 x 100m relay, the quartet of Phillips, Fletcher and the two Duncan brothers, ran Bracknell’s second fastest time this year, to finish over half a second ahead of the second team home. In the 4 x 400m relay, Lyle Duncan, Doug Gray, Mitchell White and Richard Larsen, recorded Bracknell’s fastest time this year, bringing the baton home, over 120m ahead of their nearest rival.
On the field Luke Martin had every right to feel aggrieved, at not being given the High Jump title. Winning on the count back system, Luke was placed second, defeated by an official’s sloppy recording. Staying with the Jumps, Aaron Bell making his debut in the senior side, took impressive second places in both the junior, Long and Triple Jump events.
Robert Mungham another making his season’s debut, won the the senior Hammer, with his best throw since 2008. His “B” string partner Team Captain Jan Drzewiecki, completed the double, again with a season’s best throw. This partnership was reversed in the final throwing completion, the Discus. Where Jan again with a season’s best effort, won the senior event and Robert the junior. In the Javelin, Matthew Why suffering with a sore shoulder, did well to take second place.
The result of the Division Four match was, Queens Park Harriers first with 157 points, Holland Sports second with 130, Worthing came third with 115 points, Sutton were a close fourth with 113 and Bracknell were sadly fifth, with 90 points. Although bringing up the rear, the Division Four Boys managed to hold up their end with some fine performances.
Chris Larsen won the 800m, in a new personal best time. Luke Bartholomew borrowed from the Young Athletes League, knocked nearly four seconds from his own PB, to take second place in the junior two lap race.
Jeremy Sanders won the Javelin and took second place in the Hammer, with new personal best distances. Likewise Patrick Coggins recorded his best throw with a third place in the Shot Putt.
Mention should also be made of Ross McGeoch-Williams, who has returned to Bracknell after a five year absence. Ross gallantly competed five of the events. The High Jump, the 100 and 400m. The 1500m and the 3000m Steeple Chase. His best success coming in the 400m, where he recorded a new PB.
Young Athletes League, Boys - May 16th, 2010
On Sunday, the combined boys and girls Bracknell team, competing at Home, In their second round match, in the Southern One West division of the Young Athletes League, had their second win of the season. Finishing over two hundred points clear, of their nearest rival.
Bracknell’s score was 588 points, with Thames Valley Harriers and Ealing sharing second place, tied on 377 points each. Of Bracknell’s overall total of 588, the Boys scored 298 points.
in the Under 13 side, Luke Harris, the current Berkshire Quadrathlon Champion, ran a Grade Three time winning the 1500, a success he shared with team mate Will Collins, who taking second place in the race, set a new PB. Robbie Wilde made a Grade Four clearance to win the High Jump. Whereas partner Josh Collins jumped a personal best to win the “B” string competition, completing a winning double, last achieved in May 2008. Earlier Robbie with a new personal best distance, had won the “A” string Long Jump, being the first to do so, since July 2008.
Dean Hull with a Grade Two personal best putt, won the Shot, allowing new boy James Coster to win the “B” string with a Grade Four personal best effort. Two others, made team debuts. Jack Hellewell was a clear winner of the 200m and Ethan Tattersall ran strongly to take second “A” string place in the 800m.
Three Berkshire Champions competed in the under Fifteen side. 800m Champion Matt Seddon, currently the second fastest at the event in the country, won the two lap race in a National Standard time. Matt finished 21 seconds clear of the second man home, who was team mate Steve Payne, who himself set a new PB. Matt later went on to win the 400m in a Grade Three time and for his efforts, received Bracknell’s Man of the Match award.
Berkshire High Jump Champion, Ben Russell made a grade Two clearance and shared the winning honours with partner Saxon Coop, who came second in the competition. Ben had earlier in a Grade Four time, been victorious in the junior 80m hurdles. The senior race being won with a Grade Three clocking by Berkshire Champion Alex Walker. Alex later jumped a new Grade Three PB to win the Long Jump.
Scott Halstead ran a Grade Two, his fastest time yet, to claim the 1500m and got to share his success with Dan Riddington, who ran a new PB to win the “B” string. Charles Grint and Aaron Scardifield in the 200m, also shared a double success. Both lads achieving the exact Grade Four times. Charles later took second place in the 200m and was rewarded with a new Grade Three personal best time. Another achieving a personal best, was George Summersgill, who took second place in the Hammer.
Four youths made debuts in the Under 17 side. New to the team, Jake Pope and Shaun O’Mahony, both took well deserved second places in the 200m. Shaun McLauglan with a Grade Three PB, won the 1500m. His only challenge coming from team mate Seb Bowerman, who taking second place in the race, was only a second outside of his own personal best time. This winning duo became the first to achieve the double since July 2005.
A Double dating back to June 2008, the 800m, was beaten by Zak Seddon running a Grade Three and partner Luke Bartholomew, who achieved a new PB. In the last individual race of the day, finishing over two and a half hurdles in front of the next man home, Zak in a National Standard time, won the 1500m Steeple Chase. Zak's next venture is representing Great Britain in the 2K Steeple Chase, at the European Youth Olympic Trials in Moscow on May 21-23. We wish him well.
Josh Speed claimed two new personal best timings. Taking second place, Josh clocked a Grade Four, in the 200m. His partner Ross Millar won the “B” string. In the 400m Josh won in a Grade Three time, knocking over three seconds from his previous best. In the one lap dash, Josh shared a winning double with Tom Oakley, the fourth member of the team making a debut.
On the field, Scott Hill scored a trio of wins. The “A” string High Jump and Triple Jump and the “B” string Long Jump. In the throws, Matthew House and Kieren Webber almost pulled off a series of three doubles. Winning both the Javelin in which they both achieved PB’s and the Discus, Matthew was sadly beaten into second place in the Shot.
The last events on the day are the relays. Bringing the baton home first in all the relays, sadly Bracknell were denied a clean sweep, being disqualified in the Under 15 4 x 400m, for a change outside the box. They won however four out of five, no mean an achievement.
The quartet of Wilde, Harris, Rob Gray and Hellewell brought the baton home safely in the Under 13, 4 x 100m. Halstead, Walker, Grint and Scardifield, were a split second away from equalling their own club record in the Under 15, 4 x 100m relay. In the Under 17, 4 x 100m, Pope, Speed, Millar and O’Mahony, ran the fastest time since at least June 2008. Then in the last relay of the day, the Under 17, 4 x 400m, McLauglan, Tom Wilde, O’Mahony and Millar, finished a second ahead of the next team home.
Young Athletes League, Girls - May 16th, 2010
On Sunday 16th May Bracknell AC hosted the second round of the National Young Athletes League, after a comfortable win in the first round a confident team lined up in the second round hoping to do the same again. Again they didn't disappoint and Bracknell won the meeting by almost two hundred points ! Many athletes achieved personal best performances.
On the track the girls dominated. The hurdles were the first events. In the U13 70mH Amy Bowers won in a personal best time. Sadly in the U15G event Emma Osborn fell after the last hurdle – which she had got to first with ease, only to come 5th. In the 800m Bracknell scored a 1 & 2 in the U17W with both Fern Brereton and Grace Collins recoding personal best times. In the U15 girls Vicki Birch ran strongly to win, she was supported well by Tess Pritchard in 3rd place. The U13 Girls followed suit and recorded a 1 & 2 for Hannah McClay and Siannah Rayment both running very strongly and recording grade 1 times. The 100m, usually not a strong event for Bracknell girls was a success, Kennedy Bays ran superbly to win the U13G 75m in a grade 1 time, she was supported well by Amy Bowers in 4th place. Emma Osborn, recovering well from the hurdles was narrowly beaten into 2nd place in the U15 event & Lizzie Butcher won the U17 race, with Hannah Kay running well in her first race for Bracknell finished a close 5th. This year the 3000m is run as a combined race girls & boys, which suited our girls well. Maximum points were achieved as Becky Berger North ran a strong fast race to win, with Ella Row in 2nd.
In the longer sprint Kennedy Bays ran superbly again to win the U13 150m in a grade 1 time, supported by Hannah McClay finishing strongly to take 2nd place. Ellie Cooper & Amy Johnson normally compete in the field events, stepped in for points in the U15 200m, both ran well for 3rd & 4th places respectively. Lizzie Butcher finished a narrow 2nd in the U17 event, with Beth Nixon close behind in 4th place. Wins were again recorded in the 1500m – with Bracknell girls winning all three age groups. The twins Hope & Grace Goddard both ran exceptional races for 1st & 2nd places, both in grade 1 times. Rebecca Howard and Tasha Foley won the U15 and U17 events respectively.
In the field the girls were just as dominating. The only grade 1 in the field on the day was Ellie Cooper as she threw a personal best to win the U15 javelin. Ellie also won the U15 discus. Katie Allen collected valuable points in the discus (5th) & shot (3rd). Naomi Boobyer won the u15 high jump with a new personal best, and Emma Osborn was second. Amy Johnson collected good points finishing 3rd in the javelin & 4th in the shot. Lauren Baldwin & Becky Johnson both won the U17 High jump and triple jump respectively. Becky Johnson & Beth Nixon collected valuable points in the U17 javelin by coming 3rd & 5th. Beth was again in action in the discus where she finished 3rd, just behind Grace Collins in 2nd. Becky & Grace competed well in the shot for 2nd & 4th places. Lizzie Butcher jumped well for 3rd place in the long jump. The U13 girls were not as successful in the field as they were on the track, the only win was for Hannah McClay in the High jump. Kennedy Bays jumped well for 3rd in the long jump, with Siannah finishing 6th. Rebecca Halstead & Grace Goddard both collected valuable points in the shot finishing in 4th & 5th places.
The day finished on a high with wins in the 4 x 100m relay for the U13 girls & U17 women, with the U15 girls a close second.
Bracknell AC Girls Athlete of the Match – Kennedy Bays for her Grade 1 performances and wins in the 75m & 150m
Well done to all the athletes taking part, you should be really proud of yourselves. Also a big thank you to all the officials, coaches and parents for their help and support on the day.
Southern Men's League - May 15th, 2010
On Saturday, the senior male side of Bracknell AC, travelled to Lewes for their second match in Division Three South, of the Mens Southern League. Despite winning thirteen of the thirty six events contested, sadly Bracknell suffered defeat. Eastbourne won the match scoring 96 points, home team Lewes were second with 83 points, South London came third with 82 points and Bracknell were fourth with 77 points.
Lacking some of their specialist athletes, Bracknell could not contest ten of the events. Namely both strings of the 110m Hurdles, the 3K Steeple Chase, the Pole Vault and the Triple Jump and the “B” strings of the 400m Hurdles and Long Jump. Coming last in each of these events would have gained the Club second place in the match. Better than last place, Bracknell would have won. With the gradual return of athletes from the Universities, starting hopefully with the next match, Bracknell’s strength can only improve.
In the short sprints, Fraser Duncan equalled his personal best time to comfortably win the “B” string 100m. Youth Ross Millar, borrowed from the Young Athletes League, notched up his first win in the senior ranks, with a fine victory in the “B” string 200m. Lyle Duncan set a new PB winning the “A” string 400m Hurdles and another PB with a victory in the junior 400m race.
Mitchell White showed the rest of the field the way home, in both the senior 800m and 1500m races. The 1500m was a double victory, with Jamie Ashton taking the “B” string crown. Earlier Jamie and Sam London (in his first outing at the distance), had scored another double victory, in the 5000m. The last win on the track came in the 4 x 400m relay. Where the quartet of L Duncan, Doug Gray, Millar and White, successfully brought the baton home.
There were three wins on the field. Patrick Coggins won the “B” string Hammer and team Captain Jan Drzewiecki throwing a seasons best took the senior Discus. But perhaps the most pleasing of all, was Matthew Why’s victory in the “A” string Javelin. Pleasing because he beat his own personal best, set back in 1998.
Young Athletes League, Boys - May 2nd, 2010
On Sunday, the combined boys and girls team from Bracknell AC travelled the short distance to Eton, for their first outing this year in the Southern One West division of the Young Athletes League.
Since last season the League has been completely restructured. Firstly, instead of four, now only three teams compete in a match. Secondly, the structured “A” and “B” string system has been dropped and a first past the post policy has been adopted. In previous years the marking was based on two different competitions per event, with four points for first place, down to one point for last. Now with a maximum of only six athletes competing each event all athletes compete together. With the scoring based on six points for the overall win, five points for second place, down to one point for the runner up. Therefore making it possible, for a team to score eleven points per event instead of the previous eight.
The new system of scoring seemed to suit Bracknell as they ran away with the match, finishing nearly one hundred points ahead of their nearest rival. Bracknell’s overall score was 542.5 points, Camberley came second with 447.5 points and Chiltern were third with 431 points.
The star of the show in the Under 13 side was undoubtedly Tom Lewis. Making his debut for the Club, Tom won both of his events, with a grade three performance in the High Jump and a grade four time in the 1500m. Another newcomer to the ranks was Dean Hull, who with an impressive grade three putt, won the Shot, beating his nearest rival by nearly a metre. Making his debut to the league but not the club, was Robbie Wilde, who with partner Luke Harris, took respective second and third places in the Long Jump. Luke who jumped a new personal best had earlier run a Grade Four time, taking second place in the 800m. His partner Will Cooper who took fourth place in the combined event, would have been declared “B” string winner under the old system. Another making his debut to the league but not the club was Rob Grey, who with partner Joshua Collins ran the 200m. Although not a favourite event for either, they both did well, earning themselves new personal best timings.
It would be churlish to nominate a star from the Under Fifteen side, for out of the fifteen events on offer, Bracknell won thirteen of them. The first individual win on the track was Alex Walkers’s splendid grade one clocking in the 80m Hurdles. This set the tone, for Charles Grint and partner Aaron Scadifield who took first and second places in the 100m, a feat not achieved since April 2006. Then Charles with partner Alex Walker did the same in the 200m, a double victory not achieved since pre 1995. So the victories kept coming. Scott Halstead and Matthew Seddon took the honours in the 400m, with Scott in a new personal best grade two time and Matt with a grade three new PB. Scott went on to win the 800m with a grade three clocking and Matt winning the 1500m also with a new Grade Three time.
The victories were not just restricted to the track with Bracknell winning five of the seven field events on offer. Ben Russell and Saxon Coop took maximum points in the High Jump, a feat last achieved in May 2005. Aaron Scadifield with a grade three leap and Alex Walker a grade four PB took the honours in the Long Jump, a double last achieved back in July 2006. In the Throws, Saxon Coop and Harry Wilde took first and second places in the Javelin, last achieved back in May 2003. George Summersgill who later went on to win the Discus, had earlier (with partner Ben Russell taking second place) won the Hammer. The duo recorded a double victory last achieved in May 2005.
Zak Seddon in the Under 17 team won the 1500m Steeple Chase in a grade one time and received Bracknell’s Man of the Match award. Josh Speed won both the 200 and 400m races. Adam Wimbledon and Seb Bowerman took second and third places in the 1500m and Luke Bartholomew recorded a new PB taking third place in the 800m. Making his debut to the League, Blake Roberts recorded two fine second places in the 100m and 100m Hurdles races.
On the field, James Parker another making a League debut, won the Hammer with a Grade Four throw. Matthew House won both the Shot Putt and Javelin and took second place in the Discus.
Bracknell won three of the five relays. Blake Roberts, Josh Speed, Luke Bartholomew and Ross Millar won the U17 4 x 100m in impressive style, finishing over Three and a half seconds in front of the next team home. Matt Seddon, Aaron Scardifield, Steve Payne and Scott Halstead, got the baton safely home in the U15 4 x 400m, to record victory. But undoubtedly the most newsworthy win came in the U15 4 x 100m relay. Where the quartet of Scott Halstead, Alex Walker, Charles Grint and Aaron Scardifield, finishing nearly six seconds ahead, bettered their time of the previous Sunday at the Alder Valley meeting. A previous timing that had broken the 1975 Club Record.
Please note the home YAL match is @ Bracknell on 16 May starting @ 11.30hrs
Young Athletes League, Girls - May 2nd, 2010
Bracknell AC Young Athletes travelled to Windsor on Sunday 2nd May to compete in the opening match of the National Young Athletes League. Even though the day was cold, wet and windy the athletes competed well against Chiltern and Camberley to easily win their match by 95 points!
The U13 Girls produced 5 individual wins, 3 second places and won the relay. Kennedy Bays ran well into a strong headwind to win both the 75m & 150m sprints, Hannah McClay ran a tactical race to win the 800m, with Siannah Rayment 2nd. Darcy Coop won the high jump. In the 1200m the Goddard twins Hope and Grace dominated the race to finish almost at the same time – both recording a Grade 1 performance. Natacha Parker performed well in the shot put to narrowly finish 2nd with the same put as the winner. Amy Bowers ran well against tough opposition in the 70m hurdles and 75m. This was a pleasing performance especially as some of the girls were competing in their first competition.
The U15 Girls, many competing against older girls performed well. Ellie Cooper, showed just how hard she’d been working over the winter, by winning all three throwing events and producing personal bests in the javelin and shot. Emma Osborn won the long jump and was a close second in the high jump and 75m hurdles. Vicki Birch paced herself well in the 1500m to produce a personal best and come second, Rebecca Howard ran well for 3rd place. Amy Johnson produced some good throws in the field events. Coutnry Gibbons and Naomi Boobyer ran well against tough opposition in the sprints. Charlotte Turner running in her first athletics competition for Bracknell ran a tactical 800m for 2nd place, whilst Tess Pritchard was 4th.
The U17 Women produced some good performances and ‘filled in’ for points where they could. Despite this seven of the 16 events were left empty. Sophie Papps won the sprint double , with grade 4 times for both the 100m & 200m. Becky Turton also ran well to win two events – the 800m & 300m. In the longer distances there were wins for Becky Berger- North 1500m and Grace Collins in 3000m. In the throws Hannah Williams (Shot), Grace (Discus) and Beth Nixon (Javelin) all competed well to gain runners up places, as did Ella Row in the 1500m and Tasha Foley in the 3000m. Philly Bowden ran well for 3rd place in 800m and Beth Nixon ran well for 4th in her first 300m. In the relays unfortunately an error in the 4 x 100m relay meant disqualification, whilst the 4 x 300m relay won.
Well done to all the athletes competing. Many thanks to all the officials for their help on the day, and coaches and parents for their support.

Southern Men's League - May 1st, 2010
On Saturday, the senior male side from Bracknell AC ventured to Sutcliffe Park, Eltham to contest their first match in Division Three South, of the Men’s Southern League. Fortunately they did not suffer the humiliating defeat of the previous year, taking a well-deserved second place to a strong home side. Cambridge Harriers won the match scoring 119 points, Bracknell were second with 78 points, Tunbridge Wells came third with 75 points and East Grinstead were fourth with 58 points.
Unfortunately for Bracknell, Cambridge Harriers also have a British League team. With the British League season, not yet under way, athletes who normally compete in the Higher League, are allowed to contest the Southern League. This made for a large disparity particularly in the throws, where with the exception of the Javelin, not one of the throwing events was won by a normal Southern League contestant.
The Javelin being the exception to the rule was thankfully won by Bracknell, where Matthew Why took the honours. His “B” string partner Jeremy Sanders ably assisted Matthew. Jeremy making his debut for the side threw a personal best to win the junior event.
For the remaining three throws, Jeremy was partnered with Team Captain Jan Drzewiecki. Their best result coming in the Discus where they both took second places, Jan taking the senior honours.
In the short sprints, Fraser Duncan took third place in the 100m and his partner Doug Gray, making his club debut, took second place in the “B” string race. The partnership of Lyle Duncan and youth Ross Millar who was making his senior debut, both took second places in the 200m. Lyle had earlier taking another second place in the 400m Hurdles.
Mitchell White won both the 400m and 800m races, Mitchell recording a new personal best time in the two-lap race. In the 400m Doug Gray, who came second in the “B” string, partnered Mitch. In the junior 800m race Chris Higgins, took the winners rostrum. Chris later went on to win the senior 1500m, with Sam London taking second place in the junior race.
The 5K saw the usual finishing positions reversed. With Alex Mouradian taking rare “A” string honours, finishing second in the senior race. Allowing his Partner Jamie Ashton to win the “B” string 5000m.
Please note the SML home match is @ Bracknell on 5 June starting @ 1300hrs

At time of going to press, a breakdown of the Girls and Boys totals was not available. But taking a massive 57 points from an overall total of 68 points, it's a pretty safe bet, that the Boys Under 13's side, won their part of the competition.

Mens Southern League Div 3S Match & Crawley
On Saturday, the senior male side of Bracknell AC, ventured to Crawley to contest their penultimate match in Division Three South, of the Mens Southern League. In rain lashed, wind swept conditions the team won nineteen of the Thirty Six events, including seven double victories, where they took both 'A' and 'B' string honours. Winning the match by fifteen points Bracknell scored 105, Horsham came second scoring 90 points, Tunbridge Wells were a close third with 87.5 points and Holland Sports came fourth with 72.5 points.
Robert Mungham and Team Captain Jan Drzewiecki, got the match off to a great start, by winning both strings of the Shot. Jan putting the Shot, a season's best distance. In the Hammer, Robert and Jan were easy winners, taking first and second places respectively. Robert beating the third man by a massive twenty four metres and Jan by a comfortable eight metres. Jan was also successful in the last throwing event of the day, the Discus, taking the "A" string honours, by a clear six metres. His "B" string partner Elliott Heighes, with a personal best throw took second place. Earlier Elliott had taken another second in the junior Javelin. His "A" string partner Matthew Why also had to settle for the runner up slot.
In the Jumps Gary Newson equalled his season's best to take second place in the Triple, just four centimetres off the winning jump. Earlier he had won the "B" string Long Jump.
On the track there were thirteen wins, which included three doubles and both relays. The 800m was a brotherly affair, Richard Larsen and younger sibling Chris taking the honours. Easy winners, they respectively finished, nine and two seconds faster than the rest of the field. Richard later won the senior 400m race and Chris ran a new personal best time in the 200m. Scott Hill, Richard's junior partner in the 400m race, also achieved a new PB.
Henry Mitchell notched up his second "A" string 1500 win, with a twelve second margin of victory. His partner Eddie Cook on leave from the Army, won the "B" string, taking second place in the combined race, nearly two seconds in front of the third man home.
Jamie Ashton set a new personal best time in the senior 5K race. Winning from start to finish Jamie lapped all but three of the sixteen contestants in the race. One of those he failed to lap was team mate Alex Mouradian, who in a season's best time, took second place in the "B" string.
Josh Gilbert who earlier had achieved Bracknell's first victory of the season in the 100m sprint, later beat off a strong challenge, to win the 110m High Hurdles. His partner in the one gasp dash was Fraser Duncan, who in a close finish took second place in the "B" string race. Bracknell's contestant in the junior Sprint Hurdles was Richard Stock. Returning to the fold after a one seasons absence, Richard made it worth the wait, by winning not only the "B" string High Hurdles, but also the junior 400m Hurdles.
Richard's "A" string partner in the 400m Hurdles was Lyle Duncan. Winning the one lap hurdles with a five second margin of victory, Lyle went on to take second place in the senior 200m flat sprint, in a new personal best time.
In the 4 x 100m relay, the quartet of Gilbert, Newson and the two Duncan brothers, knocked two split seconds off their previous match time, to record Bracknell's fastest time since July 2005. Never bettered, they won the race by nearly a second. Then in the closing event of the day, the 4 x 400m relay, the squad of Mitchell, L Duncan, Cook and Larsen were easy winners. Richard running the glory leg, brought the baton home, eleven seconds, nearly eighty metres clear of the second team finishing.
Young Athletes League - Hillingdon
On Sunday 18th May, Bracknell Athletics Club took a well deserved second place, in their second round match of the Young Athletes League. Competing in the Southern One West Division, the combined boys and girls team, finished runner up to hosts Hillingdon. Isle of Wight came third and Poole Runners were fourth. At time of going to press, a breakdown of the Girls and Boys totals was not available. But taking a massive 57 points from an overall total of 68 points, it's a pretty safe bet, that the Boys Under 13's side, won their part of the competition.
Undoubtedly Bracknell's Man of the Match on the Field came from within their number. Saxon Coop with a Grade One clearance won not only the High Jump, but also broke Bracknell's Under 13 Club Record, which has stood since September 2003. With partner Harry Wilde winning the "B" string they became Bracknell's first pair to win the outright event, since its introduction to the league in 2005. Not content to break one club record, Saxon in a Grade Four personal best time, went on to add the Club's 75m Hurdles record, to his tally. His partner John Dillon making his club debut, took a fine third place in the junior sprint hurdles.
Matt Seddon seemingly effortlessly, won the 1500m, in a new personal best, Grade Two time. His partner Ben Horgen, with a Grade Four timing, made it a winning double for Bracknell. The third double for the Under 13's was previously achieved in June 2006. Aaron Jordan-Noi, making his league debut, won the 100m, in a new Grade Three time. His "B" string partner Jamie Hill, making his club debut, completed the double victory with a Grade Four timing. Later Jamie was to win the Long Jump with a Grade Four leap. The first to win the senior event for Bracknell since July 2005.
