Bullying of any kind is unacceptable. Bullying takes many forms but ultimately it is the perception of the victim that determines whether or not they are being bullied rather than the intention of the bully. We expect that all volunteers and staff will work together to prevent and reduce bullying.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf bullying does occur, everyone should be able to speak up and know that incidents will be dealt with promptly and effectively. This means that anyone who knows that bullying is happening is expected to tell the club welfare officer, committee member, competition provider or England Athletics.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003ch1\u003eWhat is Bullying?\u003c/h1\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePhysical bullying, hitting, slapping, or pushing someone.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cul\u003e\u003cli\u003eVerbal; name calling, gossiping, or threatening someone.\u003c/li\u003e\u003c/ul\u003e\n\u003cul\u003e\u003cli\u003eNon – verbal abuse; hand signs or text messages\u003c/li\u003e\u003c/ul\u003e\n\u003cul\u003e\u003cli\u003eEmotional abuse; threating, intimidating, or humiliating someone.\u003c/li\u003e\u003c/ul\u003e\n\u003cul\u003e\u003cli\u003eUndermining, constant criticism or spreading rumours.\u003c/li\u003e\u003c/ul\u003e\n\u003cul\u003e\u003cli\u003eControlling or manipulating someone\u003c/li\u003e\u003c/ul\u003e\n\u003cul\u003e\u003cli\u003eMaking silent, hoax or abuse calls\u003c/li\u003e\u003c/ul\u003e\n\u003cul\u003e\u003cli\u003eThe following types of bullying are also hate crimes:\u003c/li\u003e\u003c/ul\u003e\n\u003cul\u003e\u003cli\u003eRacial, sexual, transphobic, or homophobic bullying\u003c/li\u003e\u003c/ul\u003e\n\u003cul\u003e\u003cli\u003eBullying someone because they have a disability\u003cstrong\u003e.\u003c/strong\u003e\u003c/li\u003e\u003c/ul\u003e\n\u003ch1\u003eWhat is cyber bullying?\u003c/h1\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBullying which is carried out over the internet/social media, such as:\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cul\u003e\n \u003cli\u003eA peer who intimidates using a social networking website such as\u003c/li\u003e\n\u003c/ul\u003e\n\u003cul\u003e\u003cli\u003eA coach who sends negative feedback about a participant via personal text message\u003c/li\u003e\u003c/ul\u003e\n\u003cul\u003e\u003cli\u003eA club member who posts negative comments about a fellow member on a club forum. Cyber Bullying may also include threats, sexual remarks and hate speech.\u003c/li\u003e\u003c/ul\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eE-Bullies may publish personal contact information of their victims at websites. They may\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eattempt to act as the victim for the purpose of publishing material in their name that would\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003edefame or ridicule them.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCyber Bullying is particularly serious due to the nature in which the abuse occurs. It can be\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003every personal and take place in a closed private format where the victim may feel isolated,\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eand the content will not be viewed by parents, friends or siblings. Alternatively, it could\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003etake place in a public format. It may lead to the victim rereading any material in private\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eperhaps leading to feelings of paranoia, depression, or loneliness.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003ch1\u003eProcedures\u003c/h1\u003e\n\u003col\u003e\n \u003cli\u003eReport bullying incidents to the Club Welfare Officer or a member of the club’s committee.\u003c/li\u003e\n \u003cli\u003eIn cases of serious bullying, the incidents will be referred to UK Athletics Safeguarding team for advice.\u003c/li\u003e\n \u003cli\u003eParents/carers should be informed and may be asked to attend a meeting to discuss the problem.\u003c/li\u003e\n \u003cli\u003eIf necessary and appropriate, the police may be consulted.\u003c/li\u003e\n \u003cli\u003eThe bullying behaviour or threats of bullying must be investigated and the bullying stopped quickly.\u003c/li\u003e\n \u003cli\u003eAn attempt will be made to help the bully (bullies) change their behaviour.\u003c/li\u003e\n \u003cli\u003eIf mediation fails and the bullying is seen to continue the club will initiate disciplinary action under the club constitution.\u003c/li\u003e\n\u003c/ol\u003e\n\u003ch1\u003eRecommended club action\u003c/h1\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf the club decides it is appropriate for them to deal with the situation they should follow the procedure outlined below:\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003ch1\u003e \u003c/h1\u003e\n\u003ch1\u003eChild to Child Bullying\u003c/h1\u003e\n\u003col\u003e\n \u003cli\u003eReconciliation by getting the parties together. It may be that a genuine apology solves the problem.\u003c/li\u003e\n \u003cli\u003eIf this fails/is not appropriate, the Welfare Officer or appropriate Committee Member should meet with the parent/carer and child alleging bullying to get details of the allegation. Minutes should be taken for clarity, which should be agreed by all as a true account.\u003c/li\u003e\n \u003cli\u003eThe same person should meet with the alleged bully and parent/carer and put the incident raised to them to answer and give their view of the allegation. Minutes should again be taken and agreed.\u003c/li\u003e\n \u003cli\u003eIf bullying has in their view taken place, the individual should be warned and put on notice of further action i.e. temporary or permanent suspension if the bullying continues.\u003c/li\u003e\n \u003cli\u003eConsideration should be given as to whether a reconciliation meeting between parties is appropriate at this time.\u003c/li\u003e\n \u003cli\u003eIn some cases the parent/carer of the bully or bullied player can be asked to attend training sessions, if they are able to do so, and if appropriate. The club committee should monitor the situation for a given period to ensure the bullying is not being repeated.\u003c/li\u003e\n \u003cli\u003eAll coaches involved with both individuals should be made aware of the concerns and outcome of the process i.e. the warning.\u003c/li\u003e\n\u003c/ol\u003e\n\u003ch1\u003eAdult to Child bullying\u003c/h1\u003e\n\u003col\u003e\n \u003cli\u003eThis should be treated as a Safeguarding matter and UK Athletics be informed and will advise on action to be taken where appropriate. This may include action by The UK Athletics Safeguarding Team.\u003c/li\u003e\n \u003cli\u003eIt is likely that this will be investigated as a breach of the Code of Conduct as per the club Disciplinary Policy.\u003c/li\u003e\n \u003cli\u003eMore serious cases may be referred to the Police and/or Children’s Social Care.\u003c/li\u003e\n\u003c/ol\u003e\n\u003ch1\u003eAdult to Adult bullying\u003c/h1\u003e\n\u003col\u003e\n \u003cli\u003eThis should be treated as an internal complaint of misconduct. A written complaint should be obtained from the victim by the Club Secretary and if considered valid the alleged bully should be asked for a written response.\u003c/li\u003e\n \u003cli\u003eMediation and an early resolution with agreement to cease the behaviour may be possible.\u003c/li\u003e\n \u003cli\u003eIf mediation does not work or is not appropriate, the complaint will then be investigated as a breach of the Code of Conduct as per the club Disciplinary Policy.\u003c/li\u003e\n \u003cli\u003eMore serious cases may be referred to England Athletics/Police\u003c/li\u003e\n\u003c/ol\u003e\n\u003ch1\u003eWhy it is important to Respond to Bullying?\u003c/h1\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBullying hurts. No one deserves to be a victim of bullying. Everybody has the right to be treated with respect. Athletes who are bullying need to learn different ways of learning.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBracknell Athletic Club have a responsibility to respond promptly and effectively to issues of bullying.\u003c/p\u003e\n\u003ch1\u003eObjectives of this Policy\u003c/h1\u003e\n\u003cul\u003e\u003cli\u003eAll committee members, coaches, athletes, parents and club members should have an understanding of what bullying is.\u003c/li\u003e\u003cli\u003eAll committee members, and coaching staff should know what the club policy is on bullying, and follow it when bullying is reported.\u003c/li\u003e\u003cli\u003eAll athletes and parents should know what the club policy is on bullying, and what they should do if bullying arises.\u003c/li\u003e\u003cli\u003eAs a club we take bullying seriously. Athletes and parents should be assured that they would be supported when bullying is reported.\u003c/li\u003e\u003cli\u003eBullying will not be tolerated.\u003c/li\u003e\u003c/ul\u003e\n\u003ch1\u003eSigns and Symptoms\u003c/h1\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA child may indicate by signs or behaviour that he or she is being bullied.
